What is the Green Mountain Smoker?

The Green Mountain Grills company specializes in wood fire and pellet grills, which burn wood pellets rather than gas or charcoal to cook. Their pellet grills are top of the line while remaining affordable, and the company offers a range of high-quality pellets, dry-rubs, and sauces to help their customers create the best possible meal and grilling experience. You can even subscribe to their newsletter for additional tips and recipes. Green Mountain products are sold across the United States in various locations.

Their grills, also called smokers, are unique because they use wood pellets to feed the fire. The hot rod will ignite automatically, while a motor turns the auger to feed them to the firebox slowly and a combustion fan keeps the flames burning strong. The vents in the firebox allow the smoky flavor to flavor and cook your food simultaneously.

Each of the models comes in either black or stainless steel, with the stainless-steel and WiFi options costing more. A basic Daniel Boone in black, for example, is priced on the company’s website for $499, while the WiFi capabilities upped the price to $599 and the same model with stainless steel costs the most at $649.

With digital WiFi capabilities, you can use an app to access information on your grill. The app is available for iOS and Android phones, and it allows you to monitor and control the entire process without even needing to move from the couch.

Most of Green Mountain’s grills will also come with benefits like a meat probe, a convenience tray with hooks to hang utensils, a Sense-Mate thermal sensor to continuously monitor the temperature, and a peaked lid to cook rib racks easier.

Their three top models include the following pellet grills:

  • Jim Bowie
  • Daniel Boone
  • Davy Crockett

To learn more about the grill options offered by Green Mountain, explore the following product specifications. Keep in mind that each of these grills varies, but they function the same way.

Jim Bowie

The oldest and most trusted Green Mountain smoker, the Jim Bowie model has been around for 11 years.  With this grill, you don’t need to worry about your food. You can simply set it and forget about it for a while, but still, produce stellar food. This option offers a ton of space so you can cook an entire small hog, a dozen racks of ribs, or tons of steaks all at once. However, it is 185 lbs.

Another great feature is that this model comes with stainless steel and GMG’s Smart Control feature that allows you to adjust the smoke or grill temperature using an app on your smartphone. The days where you have to stay home all day while you smoke meat is a thing of the past, as this feature allows you to check on the grill from wherever you go. This grill is also available with accessories like a dome thermometer, a no-warp stainless steel lid, and a form-fitting cover.

The Daniel Boone grill can handle an impressive amount of meat, not quite as much as the Jim Bowie but more than the smaller Davy Crockett model. It offers all the same great features, such as the Smart Control system and app functionality, and it can hold up to 7 rack of ribs, a large upright turkey, or tons of hamburgers at once. This option comes in black with WiFi capabilities for $599 on GMG’s website. However, this grill only weighs 155 lbs.

Plus, when it gets cold, you'll never need to wait long for the smoker to heat up thanks to the Turbo mode. The sensors alert the grill so you don’t have to, and there are other great features such as the positive pressure hopper, which prevents one side of your food from appearing black or burning. The automatic shut off kicks the grill off when the food is finished.

How the Green Mountain Smoker Compares

Although other Green Mountain smoker reviews rank either Daniel Boone or the large Jim Bowie grills as the best the company has to offer, we’ll focus on the smaller Davy Crockett grill. Davy Crockett is a great portable wood pellet grill, and many people enjoy this type of smoker over cooking with charcoal or propane any day. When it comes to the competition, there are two other top pellet grills with similar features: the Camp Chef Pursuit 20 Portable Pellet Grill and the Outland Portable Camping Stove.

The Outland model, unlike either competitor, runs on propane instead of wood pellets. This will mean a totally different type of cook and flavor. The smoky wood taste makes pellet grills much better. Camp Chef model can cook more food at once than the other two options, but they’re all great for camping or cooking in a small backyard.

Green Mountain is known for offering great prices on their grills with high-tech and convenient features. Most options around this price range will cost much more for the same or similar features. While the Camp Chef Pursuit is also stainless steel, neither it nor the Outland Portable Camping Stove holds up. The WiFi and app capabilities place GM ahead of the competition by far, and the technology they use to offer a great flavor and maintain safety is advanced.

Outland offers a one-year limited warranty whereas Green Mountain’s warranty lasts three years. However, Camp Chef tops both competitors by offering a no-hassle warranty to cover all defects in material or workmanship.

With the taste, top features, and high-quality materials, Green Mountain is by far the best portable option for the price.

Pros and Cons

Although the Davy Crockett is the smallest model Green Mountain Grills offers, it comes with the same top of the line features and WiFi capabilities that customers love about the company. These grills come with unique features that stand out from the crowd, and the Davy Crockett model offers everything you need in a grill you can take camping: it’s portable, has multiple power options, and is WiFi enabled.

One of the best things about Green Mountain Grills is that they’re super safe. They come with a pressure fan to restrict sparks from the auger, which can start hopper fires in a flash, and the automatic shut-off or fan-only modes will allow you to keep the ash from the firebox (where the wood pellets are housed) when you’re done cooking.

They’re also highly convenient. If you’re low on fuel, the hopper alarm will let you know that you need more pellets. Plus, the WiFi availability allows you to check on your grill using an app so you can monitor the unit from your couch.

Plus, they’re highly energy efficient. The turbo mode will help boost the grill up to temperature faster in cold temperatures, saving you fuel and time, and the burn is clean and efficient.

Overall, there really aren’t any negative about this grill. Some people may find the fact that GMG options reach top temperatures at 500 degrees Fahrenheit a con, but with so many other awesome features you don’t normally find in such an affordable priced model, it seems the company has outweighed any disagreeable parts.

The only thing people don’t like about Davy Crockett is that you can’t feed over 12 people in one go, so if that’s your goal, you’ll need a larger model. However, you can still make a lot of food for such a small and portable smoker.

Verdict

We give Green Mountain Grills, particularly the Davy Crockett model, a five out of five rating. It’s a highly affordable grill with some of the best features you can find, such as the ability to check on your grill using an app on your phone, and it’s entirely portable so you can take it anywhere.

If you’re on-the-go, this is the smoker you want to take with you. Our Green Mountain smoker reviews reveal this option is just what you need if you often cook away from home.
